Henry and Epstein Flip Their Wigs

Well, I guess the "Yankees throw the most money around" meme gets put in the trash can from here on out, since it seems they finished a very distant third in this particular chase:

For $51m, Sox get go-ahead on Matsuzaka - The Boston Globe

$51.1 million, just to talk to the guy? Which means talking to frackin' Boras?

So figure when it's all said and done, signing this one Japanese pitcher, who everyone says looks like the real deal, but he earned that rep playing against who, exactly? Guys mostly sitting somewhere between double and triple "A" status (with maybe a handful of major league level batters scattered about the league)--is going to cost the Sox something north of 90 million bucks!

For ONE guy, who'll be under contract for somewhere between three to five years.

In his most insane moments (RhoidBoy) Darth Boss George at least was betting on a better track record than a hot shot minor league career. The only time he ever went out on a limb remotely like this was... that Fat Pussy Toad.

i guess history will have to determine if it was a good signing. for the record, a Yanks bid of $30 mil or so would probabaly equal the amount the Sox paid due to the whole luxury tax thing.... i guess thats the price you pay for fielding a team $60-70 mil over the threshhold year after year...

By the way Cashman is piling up young arms, I don't think he was really interested. It's kind of sick, but I think the Yanks made that bid as a token gesture, figuring they'd be outbid but keeping all the Japanese fans Matsui brought to the team happy by acting like they were interested. If they somehow won the negotiating rights, they'd then offer the kid a 3year/10-12 mill per deal, and Boras would jump on it.

The thing I just can't wrap my head around is all the talk Henry and Epstein had used about not wanting to bloat their payroll (a big reason Damon's playing in the Bronx), but were willing to go that crazy spending money just to TALK to Boras. Sure, if they can't come to an agreement they get the money back, but then they also look like assholes making the bid to begin with... and they'll never be able to float that "we can't spend money like the Yankees" meme ever again when a big ticket free agent is on the market.

But if the Sox sign him, can you imagine how bonkers Japanese baseball fans will be the first game the kid's scheduled to start a game where he'll be facing Godzilla? It'll be every scalper's wet dream!

And as far as the threshold: the Yanks don't care--they are a subdivision of the US Mint and can print money at will. I mean, when the new Stadium is built, the money they ask for those luxury boxes and preferred (corporate) seating is gonna be downright obnoxious, and they'll sell 'em all the minute they go on sale.

the philosophy was to try to get a younger, smarter(cheap value based) and homegrown mix. that way, you get have money for the occasuinal big FA pick-up (when they are entering their prime hopefully). they want to try to stay just under the lux tax line to avoid wasting money.sure they paid a ton for Mat, but at least he is only 26 and seems to be entering his prime, like when they signed Pedro. as you surely know, it doent effect the lux. tax. i think they avoided damon partly due to money and partly due to fear of dimishing skills/older age. are they straying from that philosophy? i am not certain that they are.... i agree it will be intense if the sox sign mats.

Security at Fenway and the Stadium are used to dealing with RSN/Bomber fans brawling, and usually up their forces... but I don't care how many bodies they put in the stands... are they ready for freakin' ninjas! having a battle in the cheap seats? :-)

Yo! TC!

Lemme slap a little more short-term memory into ya'!

El Duque and his great-uncle Hernandez.

You got most of your money's worth from the Duke but Hernandez?

Anyway, been on the road WAY too long and hoping to get some more 'banter' in this winter.
