A case of natural selection

JIM RICE BELONGS...
If there's any justice, he will be elected along with Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn, and Mark McGwire will not.

He did it the right way. McGwire is suspected of taking performance-enhancing drugs. Until McGwire's name is cleared, if it ever will be, he will not receive the support of voters who would rather wait until there's evidence one way or the other.

"So do you think you'll get inducted this time?" Rice was asked after returning to Boston from his other home in South Carolina.

"I don't know the answer to that," he said. "I don't understand the voters sometimes. If you have the numbers to get in, if they compare to other people you've already put in, if the numbers are there, then why aren't you in? Why is Bert Blyleven not in with all of those wins and all of those strikeouts? Why is Lee Smith not in? Goose Gossage? Doesn't he have the numbers to get in? If the numbers are there, then why not? Why are so many people excluded? I never understood it."

they need to revamp the whole HOF voting process- too many grudges and personal preferences clouding these writes' judgments.

I think the biggest problem is the baseball writers. They--at least the ones I've met--almost to a one never played the game at a true competition level. They just watched.

Same with hockey. I usually refuse to talk hockey with 99% of the people who are so inclined, because they never strapped on gear and stepped on a rink with a purpose. The closest most came to the game was acting like sheep skating in a circle, always turning left.

Rice was a monster; he dominated the nightmares of pitchers far more than that idiot Winfield, yet Winfield got in while Jim Rice waits. It's bloody ridiculous. As Rice himself points out in the article, the capricious nature of HOF balloting is mind-numbing. It's not about "the best players" and it is also "not about the numbers"... so what the hell is the barometer?

Mattingly isn't in, but Winfield is? BULLSHIT. Lee Smith and Goose don't make the cut? They were the scariest relief pitchers you could ever imagine in their day.

Think about it: who would you rather face: Goose or Mo?

Mo might strike me out, but Goose may damn well kill me!

You hit it on the head. Goose would just as soon kill you as strike you out. That 'Just For Men' old queen McCarver would rather go down on Mo just because in his mind he's a hot Latino and he dresses better.

It's like Fisk and Bench vs. Thurman Munson. Captain kicked their asses, just stomped them, YET HE'LL NEVER GET IN.
